John Deer Waterloo Boy
The waterloo gasoline traction engine company
was founded in 1893 in waterloo, Iowa. Primarily
committed to building tractors, poor sales made it
imperative that the company broaden its product
line by adding stationary engines. In 1896 the
company was reorganized and incorporated under
the title of Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company,
gasoline engines were the major product of this
new company. On March 18, 1918, Deere &
company of Moline, Illinois, purchased the company.
From this healthy beginning Deere began the tractor business,
emerging as a leader in the industry.
John Deere Waterloo Boy
in December, 1911, Waterloo Gasoline Engine
Company introduced an entire new series of
engines with a redesigned water hopper. This 2
horsepower model was equipped with a gasoline
carburetor as standard equipment, but could be
converted to burn city gas at a slight extra cost.
Most early Waterloo Boy Engines has a deep blood red
green enamel with a profusion of yellow pin stripping.
Deere & Company continued to build the Waterloo
Boy line virtually intact for several years after purchasing
the company. With Deere's introduction of the renowned
Type E Engine during the 1920's all production ended of the
Waterloo Boy Engine line.
